Types of indirect heating boilers

Classic models

An indirect heating boiler is a cylindrical, cubic or rectangular-parallelepiped storage device, with the help of which hot water is produced and supplied to the faucets of plumbing fixtures. Installed in canteens, bars, restaurants, as well as in houses with autonomous and/or centralized heating to create a hot water supply system.

The design and configuration of the unit includes: a housing consisting of an external casing, insulation and an internal tank; heat exchanger coil, magnesium anode and recirculation pipe; inlet/outlet for cold/hot water and inlet/outlet for circulating coolant; pump, thermometer, thermostat, drain valve, water filter and three-way valve; security group and control unit. The device is mounted vertically in close proximity to the boiler in a specially designed room: volume ≤ 200 l to the main wall, capacity ˃ 200 l to the floor.

A distinctive feature of the storage device in question is the absence of a standard power source, which is replaced by a boiler that generates energy for the heating system. In order for hot water to flow to the sink, sink, bathtub and shower, the unit is “tied” by one closed circuit to the SGVS, and the other to the CO.

Part of the coolant intended for radiators is sent to the tank, passes through the coil from top to bottom, and returns to the boiler; cold water is supplied to the container, heated from the bottom up from the heat exchanger, moves under pressure to the mixers, and is recirculated back through a ring pipeline.

Since a portion of the thermal energy intended for heating is consumed by the boiler, a single-circuit boiler is selected with a 30% power reserve; in addition, a 3-way valve is installed at the entrance to the tank, which regulates the balance between the systems using a relay. No less useful is the insulation, thanks to the presence of which the water cools down by only 2...4 °C per day.

Advantages of classic indirect heating boilers:

  • high productivity – simultaneous supply to several parsing points;
  • possibility of recirculation - after opening the tap, hot water instantly flows;
  • the presence of thermal insulation - the liquid cools down by no more than 4 ° C per day;
  • indirect heating factor – low cost of produced water;
  • simplicity of design - ease of use.

Flaws:

  • heating duration for large tank dimensions;
  • periodic extraction of heat from the heating system;
  • low efficiency in the spring-autumn season.

As you can see, the biggest advantage of classic models is the lack of consumption of electricity, gas or other fuel. A significant disadvantage is that at the end of the heating season this advantage loses its effect.

Which indirect heating boiler is better to buy?

Having studied all possible modifications of water heaters with indirect heating, the question arises, which one is better to take for home or commercial use. Any model from the rating is suitable for household use; it is enough to decide on the main characteristics and layout. If the equipment is needed for business or the consumption of hot water is high, you should not skimp on productivity. Otherwise the device will be ineffective. The rating of the best indirect water heaters from our editorial experts reveals not only the technical characteristics, but also the pros and cons of various models. Based on them, it is easy to get a complete picture and make the right choice of a good heater for any purpose.

About the selection criteria

Before choosing the best option for this type of boiler, you need to understand what to look for.

We decided to briefly talk about the most significant criteria of all. Their knowledge and understanding will help you choose the most suitable option for you.

Storage tank volume

Its quantity is determined by daily needs and the boiler to which the water heater will be connected. If it is calculated incorrectly, there will be a problem with the appearance of hot water in several places at once. To prevent this from happening, you need to calculate the required volume in your boiler. As a rule, one person uses, on average, up to eighty liters of water per month. So much is spent not only on hygiene, but also on washing dishes.

Conclusion: you need to take a boiler with a reserve volume so that there is enough for everyone.

Volume is an important criterion when selecting a high-quality water heater

Storage tank material

Today tanks are made from three materials:

  • steel with enamel;
  • "stainless steel";
  • titanium coating.

Titanium is rarely used, but its strength is much higher, as is its price.

Conclusion: the tank must be made of a material that is resistant to corrosion. In addition, you need to pay attention to the presence of a magnesium anode.

Heat exchanger structure

There are two options for its structure.

  1. "Matryoshka" With this structure, one tank is located in another. The one inside is filled with water. The one on the outside is where the coolant circulates.
  2. Heat exchanger with coil. Typically one coil is used, although more than one can be used.

Important! If there are two coils, the boiler can be connected to a second heat source.

How does an indirect heating boiler work?

heating element

If you have a tubular electric heater, the boiler can be used all year round. If it is impossible to connect an alternative heating element, the water heater will heat from the mains.

Inlet pressure

This indicator is one of the determining criteria when installing it in an apartment, since central heating often fluctuates.

Conclusion: you need to take durable boiler models.

It is important to consider what water pressure will be at the inlet

Find out more about the correct connection of an indirect heating boiler with your own hands - in the article you will find detailed step-by-step instructions.

Criteria for choosing an indirect heating boiler

Using a volumetric tank that produces heating thanks to an already installed heating system or additionally connected equipment, you can significantly increase the hot water resources in the house.

More often, the BKN is installed near the boiler that provides heating of water for heating the house, and the DHW circuit is connected. Thus, it becomes part of the general house water supply system

The advantages of the boiler include efficiency, durability, and the possibility of being integrated into a DHW system with recirculation. Let's look at what criteria need to be taken into account when choosing a household water heater.

Criterion #1 – tank volume

Useful volume is one of the important parameters, directly dependent on the number of residents and the frequency of hot water consumption.

With a properly selected boiler, there will never be a shortage of hot water, and family members will always be able to simultaneously use the shower, bathtub and all installed taps.

For a large water heater, especially a floor-standing one, it is necessary to provide a special room. Usually this is a boiler room in which the rest of the equipment is installed

When buying a boiler, you can rely on general recommendations for volume:

  • 1-2 consumers and 1-2 water points - 50-80 l;
  • 2-3 consumers and 2-3 water points - 100-150 l;
  • 4-5 consumers and from 4 water points – 200-250 l.

It must be remembered that water in small tanks heats up faster, in large tanks it takes longer, and regardless of the size of the tank, the heating rate also depends on the temperature of the coolant, if the heating element is not connected.

Criterion #2 – heating temperature

The water in the BKN never reaches 100°C, since it most often takes heat from the liquid from the heating circuit - and there the temperature usually does not exceed 90°C.

To control the temperature, a temperature sensor connected to a thermometer is installed inside the tank. Using it, you can monitor the parameters, and if adjustment is provided, then set the desired temperature

On average, the temperature inside the container heats up to 65-85°C. But keep in mind that some of the heat is still lost if the pipeline is long and passes through uninsulated areas, so water may enter the tap with a temperature lowered by 5-10 ° C.

Criterion #3 – installation method

Based on the position of the body, boilers are divided into vertical and horizontal. The first ones are more popular, the second ones can be found much less often - these are either small household “indirect” ones or huge production models.

According to the place of installation, all water heaters are divided into floor-mounted and wall-mounted. Wall mounting is only possible for tanks of limited capacity. Before purchasing, be sure to check whether your wall can withstand the installation of equipment, taking into account the weight with water.

The vertical shape of the water heater is more convenient for floor installation - the base takes up much less space, and connection and maintenance are much easier

In general, among BKN there are most vertical models with floor-mounted installation, less often with universal installation. From a safety point of view, floor-mounted options are more reliable.

Criterion #4 – material of manufacture

The material from which the outer and inner tanks are made affects wear resistance and service life.

To protect the internal surface from corrosion, various types of coatings are used, including:

  • stainless steel;
  • glass ceramics;
  • enamel.

The first option is the most preferable; high-quality food-grade steel is used to protect expensive models. Enamel cracks over time due to constant temperature changes, and glass ceramics applied using the dry method are not inferior to a steel surface.

The outer casing is made of stainless steel, cheaper metal or heat-resistant plastic.

The metal of the outer tank is coated with heat-resistant paint, which lasts throughout its entire service life. If the paint is peeling off and the metal underneath is rusting, it is better to replace the boiler in a timely manner with a better one.

One of the best options for floor installation is a water heater made entirely of stainless steel. They are heavier and more expensive, but they are maximally protected from corrosion and leaks.

Criterion #5 – connecting the heating element

The introduction of an additional energy source is necessary in some cases:

  • if the heating system, centralized or autonomous, is turned off for the warm season, maintenance or repair;
  • if the coolant temperature is unstable and requires support;
  • if the temperature from the heating circuit is not enough.

Before purchasing, be sure to check whether it is possible to connect a heating element: some models do not have it, others are designed to install 1-2 heating elements. Special pipes or inspection holes are provided for them.

Which indirect heating boiler is worth purchasing?

As mentioned earlier, choosing a boiler requires taking into account a large number of criteria. Among them, several important ones stand out.

  1. Number of people.
  2. Water consumption rate.
  3. Number of water points.
  4. Storage tank volume.
  5. Power.
  6. Inlet pressure.
  7. Water heating speed.

Taking into account all the above criteria, we decided to help you choose water heater models that are suitable in most cases.

  1. If you have a small living space and you live alone or with someone, then a boiler model like the Gorenje GV 100 will be more than enough.
  2. If you have a larger living space and your family consists of 2-3 members, then you should take the Baxi Premier plus 150.
  3. A two-story house in which four people live? Then you need to pay attention to the Drazice OKC 200 NTRR model.
  4. If your life is at the “luxury” level, then there is only one option for you - Protherm FS B300S.

How to choose an indirect heating boiler

When choosing a suitable indirect water heater, experts recommend considering several factors:

  • Volume of the tank. On average, a family of 3-4 people needs a tank of 100 to 150 liters to ensure an uninterrupted supply of hot water. For low consumption, models with a smaller useful volume are suitable, but if the consumption is high, you should pay attention to larger and more productive versions.
  • The ability to install a heating element will turn the device into a regular electric water heater. This is relevant in the absence of centralized heating in the summer.
  • Internal coating - it comes in three types: stainless steel, enamel or titanium. Versions with the first two types are more common, and a minimum of 1 magnesium anode is required, which provides anti-corrosion properties.
  • Heat exchanger design. One coil in the standard configuration, two in models with connection to an alternative coolant source. “Coil in coil” is a more expensive but effective option.
  • Additional functionality. It is convenient when the model is equipped with sensors, automation, thermometers, power-on indicators at the factory or optionally. There are also important safety functions - protection against overheating, switching on without water.
  • Number of water points. Most often, there are models with two outlets for supplying hot water, which allows it to be supplied to several separate rooms at once, for example, a bathroom and a toilet or a kitchen.

In addition to the above, indirect heating boilers differ in the method of connection and installation. It is better when the model can be connected to a boiler or heating system of any type. Installation is divided into two types: wall and floor, divided into vertical and horizontal. There is also a difference in the coolant supply side. All this should be taken into account when planning.
