TOP 10 best air humidifiers for apartments: traditional, steam, ultrasonic

Air quality affects our health, comfort and the condition of the home in which we live. Newborn babies suffer especially greatly from low humidity. Dr. Komarovsky recommends maintaining it at a level of 50-70%, which is almost impossible during the heating season. The first thing you should think about in this case is a humidifier. It will help avoid dryness in the room, prevent allergies and improve the microclimate. If you have already made a purchase decision, let's choose which air humidifier is best to buy for your apartment.

Types of Humidifiers

Depending on their mechanism of action, humidifiers can be divided into three categories:

  1. traditional;
  2. ultrasonic;
  3. steam.

Traditional. It works on the principle of natural humidification - air is driven by a fan through a filter soaked in water and pushed out. Thanks to the traditional method of operation of the unit, there is no risk of “overdoing it” and achieving too high humidity - the air takes in as much as needed.

This humidifier has low performance, but acts gradually and safely. Dust settles inside the device, which is why you need to regularly fill it with clean water.

Due to the active operation of the fan, a traditional humidifier is often quite noisy, so it is not suitable for everyone to place in the bedroom.

Ultrasonic. In short, the water in it turns into steam by boiling at normal room temperature. This becomes possible due to the conversion of ultrasonic frequencies into mechanical vibration and the generation of waves of high and low pressure.

As a result of these processes, fine particles are produced, and the droplets thrown outside by the fan evaporate. A cold water mist appears before our eyes.

Ultrasonic humidifiers have high performance. At the same time, the quality of the water poured into the device is of great importance, because all harmful impurities enter the air along with the steam, which settle on various surfaces with a white coating and pollute our lungs. There are three ways to avoid this:

  • pour distilled and purified water;
  • purchase a humidifier with the function of preheating the liquid, which destroys the microorganisms contained in it;
  • choose a device with the ability to ionize air.

To avoid over-humidification, it is better to ensure that the device is equipped with a hygrostat, which will determine the moisture content in the room, and then turn the device on or off.

Steam. The method of operation is similar to the operation of a regular kettle. The water inside the device heats up, and the steam, coming out, humidifies the air. This humidifier performs its task faster than its competitors, but it is better not to use it without a hygrostat.

Thanks to high temperatures, water gets rid of harmful impurities without installing additional filters. It is better to install the unit on the edge of the table so that a puddle does not form under it.

How to choose a humidifier

Before purchasing, you should first decide on the budget that can be allocated for the purchase and maintenance of a humidifier.

Also, the success of choosing climate control devices depends on the following criteria.

Tank capacity

Each humidifier has a tank that needs to be refilled regularly with water. The volume of this reservoir determines how often you will have to add liquid. Of course, it is better to give preference to more capacious models.

However, it is worth noting that such humidifiers will have a rather bulky design. The best option is a tank with a capacity of 6 liters.

Service area

This parameter determines how quickly the device can humidify a particular area of the room.

For example, for small rooms, the optimal solution would be a model with a capacity of no more than 300 ml/h. For rooms larger than 30 sq/m, it is better to purchase more powerful devices.

Hygrostat

A similar element is installed in most expensive models. It is designed to measure and provide readings, based on which the device will automatically maintain the desired level of humidity.

When the liquid in the tank runs out, the hygrostat automatically stops humidification. To continue working, the user will have to replenish the water supply.

Design Features

Every humidifier should have a user-friendly design. Firstly, this is necessary so that the user can regularly wash the inside of the device. Secondly, you will need to frequently add fresh water to the humidifier reservoir.

To simplify the task, it is recommended to purchase devices with a removable tank and vertical water filling.

Control system

Depending on the price class, the humidifier may offer several control options. For example, for budget models ordinary keypads are provided. As for expensive devices, they support remote control via a Wi-Fi channel, so you can synchronize with the Smart Home system.

Noisiness

If a humidifier is purchased for a bedroom, then it is better to give preference to a silent model. Otherwise, the device will interfere with restful sleep.

The ideal solution is a model with a noise level of less than 20 dB. However, it is worth remembering that most quiet models tend to have low performance. Consequently, air humidification will occur too slowly.

Additional functionality

In addition to the standard humidification function, some advanced models are capable of ionizing and aromatizing the air. There are also models with a UV lamp designed to kill bacteria.

It should immediately be noted that the cost of such devices is quite high.

How to choose a good one

Before choosing a humidifier, you need to pay attention to the criteria that play a primary role for you and additional functions. Be sure to consider before purchasing the device:

  1. Room size. Manufacturers indicate in the instructions how much area the humidifier covers. The larger the room, the larger the water tank and the higher the intensity should be.
  2. Water consumption and tank capacity. Calculate the time it takes for water to evaporate from a full tank. It should not be less than 8 hours, otherwise the device will notify you in the middle of the night that you need to add water.
  3. Noise level. Here we are talking not only about the constant hum of the device, but also about additional sound signals - a low water level indicator or “gurgling” during operation.
  4. Energy consumption. Typically, a steam humidifier consumes the most electricity, followed by ultrasonic and traditional ones.
  5. The presence of a hygrometer, hygrostat. You can set the desired humidity level and device. Having achieved it, it will automatically turn off.
  6. Control type. There are three ways: built-in panel, remote control or smartphone. There are also models equipped with a smart home system (for example, Xiaomi).
  7. Backlight. Light indicators on the panel will provide information about the humidity level and operating mode even at night, but excessive brightness can interfere with sleep.
  8. Ergonomics. Evaluate how convenient it will be for you to use the humidifier, the ability to add water, change the filter, and clean the device itself.
  9. Ionization (increase in negatively charged particles) and aromatization of air.

Before purchasing, decide which features are worth paying extra for.

How to choose

In order for the water balance in the room to be ideal, when choosing a steam device, you need to pay attention to the following nuances:

  • Consider the area of the room where the steam humidifier will be installed. To do this, the packaging indicates the maximum square footage for which the unit is designed.
  • Electricity consumption. This indicator directly depends on the area of moisture. That is, the larger the area of the room, the more electricity the device will consume.
  • Whether the device is equipped with a hygrostat (a sensor that turns off the device when the set parameters are reached) or not. Typically, devices with such a sensor cost an order of magnitude more than those without it.
  • Whether there is a fragrance function or not. If such functionality is absent, then adding any additives to the humidifying unit is prohibited.
  • It is very important to choose a device with the lowest noise levels. Many buyers neglect this aspect and soon stop using the humidifier due to its irritating sound.
  • Study the care instructions for the selected device in detail, since most models have a rather complex cleaning system, which requires quite a lot of time and not everyone can do.
  • An important aspect when choosing a steam humidifier is its price. In this case, the higher the cost, the better quality and more functional the device will be.
  • Humidifier dimensions. In this case, the size of the water barrel plays an important role; the larger it is, the less often you will need to add water to it. However, it is worth considering that large steam humidifiers take up a lot of space and spoil the interior of the room.

Reference. In Russia, the most popular models of steam humidifiers are Boneco Air-O-Swiss S450 and Beurer LB 50.

However, there are two operating modes: the first evaporates 150 ml/hour, and the second 400 ml/hour. For night time, the first mode is ideal. Within a few hours, the humidity in the room will return to normal and will be maintained at a normal level. And the second, more powerful mode will help create the desired level of humidity in a short time if, for example, you have not been home for several days.

The device comes with 10 special tablets for protection against scale and limescale. The temperature of the steam at the outlet is not critical, but, according to the owners, children’s access to the device will definitely have to be limited. humidifier without filter

Before the New Year, I found out that I took part in a test drive of the Dyson Hamidifier humidifier. My first impression of it is space, it seems to me that the design is kind of cosmic. In the photo on the Internet, this humidifier seemed very large and bulky to me, but in reality this was not the case at all. He is so neat, and his smooth lines attract the eye.

A convenient remote control, which is attached to the humidifier with a magnet, only adds to the pleasant experience.

I must say that we became concerned with the issue of purchasing an air humidifier immediately from the moment the child arrived in the house. After all, everyone knows that cool, moist air is considered the most favorable. For this purpose, 3 years ago we purchased an ultrasonic humidifier.

In our apartment, the batteries are built into the walls and therefore cannot be adjusted in any way. In winter it is very stuffy, the air becomes stale very quickly. Our humidifier, in principle, coped with its task, but only in a small room of 10 sq.m. It was clearly not enough for more with our batteries. Dyson, unlike ours, has more power and a maximum humidity level of 70% versus 60%. And in general, you can adjust any humidity level or select automatic mode.

It seems to me that the water evaporation technologies of these humidifiers are similar. Another undeniable advantage of Dyson is the lack of consumables and ease of cleaning. There is no need to buy special products; all maintenance of the humidifier is carried out with a solution of citric acid. But our humidifier requires constant replacement of the filter, which costs about 1000 rubles, and after 4 months the filter looks terrible.

We installed a Dyson humidifier in a room of 20 sq.m., the door to the room is always open, because... cat at home. Literally after an hour of operation at a level of 60%, we felt freshness in the house. There was enough water for about 15 hours of continuous operation. On weekends, our humidifier works day and night. It works almost silently and does not interfere with sleep at all. On weekdays, we turn off work before leaving. We use it like this: First, turn the humidity level to maximum, and after 1-2 hours we switch to automatic mode. I would like to note that it has become really easier to breathe, sleep more pleasantly, and my sleep has become stronger. and most importantly, the skin on my face and my child’s face stopped peeling, even though we didn’t change the cream. In addition, in addition to humidification, there is a fan function. It is very convenient to have 2 devices in 1. Especially with small apartment dimensions. And thanks to the presence of a UV lamp in the humidifier, I am sure that now we breathe truly clean air. Still, it seems to me that bacteria accumulate in replaceable filters and then spread throughout the apartment. I hope now the child will get sick much less often. Thank you very much to the organizers of the test drive for such a wonderful opportunity to experience the effects of this miracle device for yourself!

When do you need a steam humidifier?

Before purchasing this or that model of humidifier, you need to decide what it is for and in which room it will be installed.

It is especially important to install such steam equipment in the following cases:

  • when there are a lot of plants in the living room;
  • for flower shops, greenhouses and conservatories;
  • if family members have problems with the respiratory system and are worried about frequent infectious diseases;
  • when the room temperature is below comfortable levels;
  • for fragrance in the room.

Attention! Before choosing a steam humidifier, first of all, you need to decide whether it can be used in a particular room. Since in a small room a powerful unit will humidify the air too much, and a low-power unit in a large room, on the contrary, will not cope with the tasks.

Weaknesses of a steam humidifier

A steam humidifier has several disadvantages

Cold steam humidifiers, like hot steam devices, have a number of disadvantages:

  1. High power consumption.
  2. Only expensive device models have the ability to control the humidity level in the room.
  3. If there is a hot steam generator throughout the entire area of the room, there is a significant increase in temperature. In the case of the winter season, this disadvantage can be considered an advantage.
  4. Due to the fact that the device includes automatic shut-off sensors, such humidifiers are quite expensive.
  5. A number of models are very dangerous for children, since the steam generator produces very high temperature steam.

Main nuances when choosing a steam humidifier

When choosing a device for humidifying indoor air, you should approach this process with special care, since deciding on the type of humidifier and the approximate cost is not everything.

When purchasing a humidifier, you should pay attention to the following features:

  1. The area of the room where the device will operate.
  2. Level of electrical energy consumption.
  3. The presence of a hygrostat in the package (applies to a device where the steam generator produces hot steam). The presence of this component makes it possible to turn on the humidifier at night without worrying about over-humidification of the air.
  4. The presence of a number of additional components - nozzles for the inhaler, a container for infusing essential oils, an electronic type of control.

Features of steam humidifiers

Steam humidifiers look like “train engines”, and their operating principle is similar to an electric kettle: a steam humidifier heats water and releases hot steam, which humidifies the air in the room. Using a steam humidifier has its advantages and disadvantages. Let's consider those that are considered to be among the first.

  1. Ability to use any water, including tap water. There are no side effects after use; you just need to periodically descale the steam humidifier.
  2. The cost of the device may please buyers. Mostly, humidifier models do not require the expense of purchasing water softening cartridges.
  3. Sterility of the hot steam coming out and high reliability of the device.
  4. Simplicity and ease of operation.
  5. High performance humidifier - evaporates up to 700 ml per hour. This indicator is the best in the rating of humidifiers of all types.
  6. The output of sterile air purified from bacteria, the destruction of which occurs in the device due to boiling.
  7. The presence of other useful functions: there are models of steam humidifiers with an inhaler function and with built-in containers for aromatic oils.
  8. Device safety. The steam humidifier will not turn on if the lid is not completely closed, and will automatically turn off when all the liquid has boiled away.

We recommend that you read: Fragrance for air humidifier

Despite all the advantages, a steam humidifier has its disadvantages.

  1. The operation of the device is to heat water, which poses a risk of burns from hot steam or boiling water from the tank. Such evaporators are not suitable for installation in an apartment with small children.
  2. An evaporative humidifier can damage wooden furniture, parquet floors and books if used near them.
  3. When using a steam humidifier for a long time, the air temperature rises several degrees, which can worsen already inadequate humidity.
  4. A steam humidifier uses a lot of electricity.
  5. To avoid the steam room effect due to waterlogging, you will have to buy and install an additional sensor.
  6. Due to boiling water, the device makes a lot of noise, which can interfere with work and sleep indoors.

In some cases, due to the described disadvantages, it is worth giving preference to cold evaporation devices. The cool mist humidifier provides natural, even evaporation and is suitable for use in families with children. The fan inside the device drives oxygen through the filter, and purified, humidified cold air enters the room. The device can also be equipped with additional functions and filters. However, the cost of the cold evaporation model significantly exceeds the cost of the previously described steam generator.

Any humidifier needs care - the device must be regularly cleaned of dirt and scale formed during operation. For these purposes, ordinary soda, special powders and a “silver rod” from the manufacturer Boneco are used.

Best Steam Humidifiers

Not only the air quality, but also the quality of life in general depends on which steam generator you choose. Below is a rating of modern models of steam humidifiers. Each of them has a huge number of positive reviews, does not create a steam room effect and does not increase the dampness of the room.

  1. The Bionaire CM-1 takes the top spot thanks to its power to performance ratio. There is no risk of burns: the steam in the device mixes evenly with cold air. The price of the Bionaire CM-1 corresponds to the quality, and its capabilities will please even the pickiest buyer.
  2. Boneco Air-O-Swiss S450 is a high quality device with an appropriate price. This steam generator is safe for children because it is not subject to strong heat. Features high performance. The size of the water tank is enough for 8 hours of operation. The device does not require additional consumables.
  3. Delonghi UH 700M is a device with the most affordable price in the rating, a large tank and an interesting design. Equipped with a bath for aroma capsules. A steam humidifier is a necessary device for a room in which it is necessary to increase and maintain normal air humidity. To choose a humidifier, it is enough to be guided by verified information and device parameters. If you find it difficult to choose a humidifier, then you should contact a technologist or energy specialist who will select the appropriate device for your room.

What type of humidifiers should you prefer?

To understand which steam generator is best to choose in a given situation, we advise you to rely on the following recommendations.

  1. Steam models are cheaper than traditional and ultrasonic models. The price also varies depending on additional functions: the presence of a hygrometer, the ability to heat water, the presence of an LCD screen. An analog steam generator is cheaper than a digital one. The steam humidifier may also have built-in aroma capsules for a pleasant scent or healing effect. Traditional models do not have them.
  2. When choosing a humidifier, you should keep the noise level in mind. In order not to replace the device after a couple of months, unable to withstand the noise, you should immediately give preference to a more expensive, but quiet humidifier.
  3. Steam humidifiers are unpretentious in operation: they do not require replaceable cartridges or special cleaning products.
