The bottom is removable, attached with magnets, plastic. The sensor works flawlessly. The lamp is very light compared to my old one. The cord is a bit short (it’s good that I have an outlet nearby), but I don’t consider this a significant drawback. I recommend the lamp, for the money it’s a really cool purchase.
