Replacing the thermostat in Atlant refrigerators with your own hands

Where is the thermostat located in single-chamber, double-chamber refrigerators Atlant

In modern models, the concept of “thermostat” is supplemented with new technological terms. The role of a thermostat here is played by temperature sensors, which would more accurately be considered motivator elements in an electronic processor for controlling and even programming the operation of the refrigerator.

If in classic products the handle is located in the same place as the regulator, then in the new refrigerator manufacturers can place the electronic control module anywhere. The most likely place to locate the thermostat is the refrigerator door. It is easy to get to the object by removing the inner plastic door panel. We emphasize again the importance of maintaining the integrity of the rubber seal, latches and other fastening parts.

Thermal sensors are placed in different chambers of the refrigerator separately, since the control process for each of these chambers occurs individually. Separate sensors send a signal to turn on the heating element of the quick defrosting system.

They also often fail, which leads to malfunctions of the electronic control module. Timely replacement of the temperature sensor in the refrigerator is very important. As a result of failures, it is often necessary to “reflash” the processor’s RAM. This operation requires a special computer program and firmware codes.

In principle, no matter where the thermostat is located, its repair will be approximately the same:

  • get to the details;
  • disconnect the capillary tube from the evaporator body;
  • carefully pull it out of the body;
  • disconnect the relay itself;
  • carefully insert the new bellows tube and securely fasten it to the evaporator;
  • connect all the necessary wires and attach the relay in place.

Replacing the thermostat in the refrigerator

The thermostat (or thermostat, thermostat) is a key element of the refrigerator, through which the temperature inside the unit is controlled. At certain moments, the thermostat sends signals to the motor-compressor to turn on and off the cooling mode in the refrigerator chambers and, thereby, maintains the temperature inside the unit.

In electromechanical models of refrigerators, the thermostat is a temperature control mechanism with a temperature sensor. Temperature sensor (thermal sensor) is a thermocouple in the form of a wire, the end of which is connected either to the evaporator or brought directly into the refrigerator chamber. There he measures the temperature.

In electronically controlled refrigerator models, the role of a thermostat is played by a control module and a temperature sensor, which is a regular thermistor. As with electromechanically controlled models, the temperature sensor may be located in the evaporator or inside the refrigerator and/or freezer compartment.

A modern two-chamber refrigerator can have from 1 to 5 temperature sensors (multi-chamber ones may have even more), which, depending on the design of the refrigerator, can be located:

  • near the evaporator of the refrigerator and/or freezer compartments;
  • inside refrigerator or freezer compartments;
  • in certain zones inside the refrigerator compartment, there may be additional temperature sensors that monitor the temperature in this zone, for example, in the “freshness zone”

According to statistics from the RemBytTech workshop, a faulty thermostat (or temperature sensor in electronic models of refrigerators) is one of the main breakdowns of refrigerators (20-25% of cases). You should immediately understand that it cannot be repaired; in any case, you will need to install a new one.

Replacing a thermostat, although simple at first glance, has many nuances, so it is best to entrust it to specialists. The service technicians will replace the temperature sensor at home within 24 hours after your request, and your refrigerator will be in full working order!

Prices for replacing a thermostat when repairing a refrigerator

The cost of replacing a temperature sensor in a refrigerator starts from 1,600 rubles . The repair price includes dismantling the old thermostat and installing a new one. Here are replacement prices based on the brand of refrigerator.

*Price is for labor only, the cost of a new thermostat is not included in the price and must be paid additionally. Or it is possible to install a sensor you purchased.

What determines the cost of replacing a temperature sensor?

  • From the cost of the part. It can vary greatly depending on the brand of refrigerator.
  • Depending on the type of refrigerator. Thermal sensors for electronically controlled refrigerator models are more expensive than for electromechanical ones. Yes, and changing them is more difficult.
  • From the location of the sensor. Thus, it is extremely labor-intensive to change the temperature sensor of the evaporator in its foamed part: you have to cut the thermal insulation, and after replacing it, restore it again.

The procedure for replacing the thermostat

  • Disassembling the refrigerator . In electromechanical models, the technician disassembles the refrigerator body to get to the thermostat (which, as a rule, is located under the top cover of the unit). In electronic models, disassembly is carried out both outside (to get to the control module, which is also located under the top cover of the unit) and inside the refrigerator chamber, where the temperature sensor is hidden.
  • Removing a faulty thermostat. To do this, in electromechanical models, the contact connectors are first disconnected from the thermostat. Next, the technician removes the lighting unit and pulls out the thermocouple of the thermostat. In electronic models, the temperature sensor is first cut off from the control unit, and then a wire with a temperature sensor is pulled from inside the refrigerator through the back wall.
  • Installing a new temperature sensor. In electromechanical models of units, the master connects the contact connectors to the new thermostat. Then a thermocouple is lowered into the evaporator channel through a special hole, and the hole itself is sealed with sealant. In electronic ones: first, the wire, at the end of which there is a temperature sensor, is threaded through the back wall of the refrigerator. After this, the wire is connected to the control module by soldering or twisting the wire. Places of soldering or twisting are covered with heat shrink to prevent moisture from entering.
  • Refrigerator body assembly. This is done in the reverse order of disassembly. Before assembly, the technician checks the resistance of the temperature sensor to ensure compliance with factory values. If, when replacing the thermostat in electromechanical models, the thermocouple is too long, the technician places it in the cavities under the top cover of the refrigerator.
  • Functionality check. At the final stage, the technician turns on the refrigerator and observes for a while whether it is working correctly.

Signs of a malfunctioning thermostat in the refrigerator

There are a number of signs that may indicate that the temperature sensor has failed. But the exact cause can only be determined after diagnosis.

  • One or both refrigerator compartments are not working . If there are several thermal sensors in the refrigerator, the chamber whose thermal relay has failed will not work. If the refrigerator has one thermostat or the evaporator sensor has failed, both chambers of the refrigerator will not work. The light inside the refrigerator compartment will light up when any temperature sensor comes out. On some refrigerator models, the Alarm indicator may light up, indicating an increase in temperature in one or both chambers. Electronic units may also display an error code on the display.
  • The refrigerator compressor rarely turns off or even runs without interruption. In this case, a thick layer of ice may form on the back wall of the refrigerator compartment (if the unit is equipped with a drip defrosting system) or in the freezer compartment. The temperature regime is violated: both chambers freeze (with one thermostat) or only one (the air temperature sensor of which has failed).
  • The refrigerator compressor rarely turns on . In this case, the temperature in both chambers is higher than the required values (regardless of the set temperature). The malfunction may be accompanied by an emergency sound or light signal if the refrigerator is equipped with these functions. They signal an increase in temperature inside the unit.

How to check the thermostat in single-chamber, double-chamber Atlant refrigerators before replacing

Before replacing the thermostat, it is recommended to check its operation. The test procedure depends on the detected signs of malfunction. If the refrigerator operates continuously and the motor does not stop, you need to perform the following steps:

  • disconnect the refrigerator from the power supply and remove all food from the chamber;
  • switch the temperature control knob to the coldest mode or turn on the quick freezing function (if equipped);
  • leave a thermometer on the central shelf of the chamber that can measure negative temperatures;
  • run the refrigerator and leave for 2-3 hours;
  • remove the thermometer and check the temperature - it should display 6-7 degrees, and if there is a strong deviation, the thermostat needs to be replaced.

To simplify the check and not waste a lot of time, you can get to the thermostat and move the plate to the sides, which is located near the pin that holds the handle. If no clicks are heard when the plate moves or it remains motionless, replace the thermostat.

How to find out if the thermostat is broken?

Users of Biryusa refrigerators are generally satisfied with the quality of these devices. But any technique fails. How do you understand that the thermostat is broken and needs to be replaced? You need to pay attention to the functioning of the freezer and refrigerator compartment. If the Biryusa 18 s model has one temperature regulator, both chambers will fail at the same time. Otherwise, the compartment in which the temperature regulator has broken down will not work.

The second, clear sign that the thermostat in the Biryusa 3 refrigerator is broken is the constant operation of the compressor. In this case, the food inside the chambers will be frozen. The opposite option is also possible, in which the food inside the refrigerator heats up, since a broken thermostat leads to an increase in temperature.

You can learn more about the process of replacing the thermostat in the Biryusa refrigerator from the video.

Eventually

Craftsmen who repair household appliances recommend not replacing thermostats in Biryusa 22 refrigerators with your own hands. At first glance, this process seems simple. However, if connected incorrectly, the new temperature controller may be damaged. To protect your equipment from secondary damage and yourself from purchasing a new thermostat, it is recommended to immediately contact a specialist.

The operating principle of the thermostat in Atlant refrigerators

First, let's figure out what it actually is. A thermostat is a device that controls the temperature in your refrigerator and sends signals to the compressor, causing it to turn on and off depending on the degree of cooling in the chamber. It works very simply. The thermostat is a relay. On one side there is a special hermetically sealed tube filled with freon. On the other hand, there are electrical circuit contacts, with their help the compressor is controlled.

It all works very simply. The end of the capillary tube is attached to the evaporator. Since it is filled with a refrigerant, for example, freon, when the t˚C rises inside the refrigeration chamber, the pressure in it increases. This closes the corresponding relay contacts and turns on the compressor. After some time, the t˚C in the refrigeration compartment decreases, the pressure in the bellows tube drops and the contacts open. The compressor turns off.

Another important component of the thermostat is a spring that compresses and releases its contacts. It depends on her how and when they will work. For example, in order to open contacts at low pressure in the system (low t˚C) less effort is needed, for high pressure - more. The spring tension is adjusted using the thermostat switch knob. This is how the temperature regime changes in the Atlant refrigerator and other models with mechanical control.

Some refrigerator models have an electronic thermostat. It consists of a temperature sensor and a control module. In modern models, several sensors can be installed for each cooling zone. If your refrigerator has electronic temperature control, repairing it may require specialized knowledge.

Information about the causes of breakdowns and repair options

The history of the Belarusian brand began more than 40 years ago, when the first refrigerator rolled off the production line. During its existence, the company has managed to achieve incredible success, becoming synonymous with high quality and reliability. Brand products usually fail due to natural wear, voltage fluctuations and mechanical stress.

Clogged capillary line

If the oil in the device begins to burn, the production of paraffins is activated. They are localized mainly in the inner part of the capillary system, at a distance of 20-30 cm from the entrance to the evaporator.

The resulting blockage interferes with the normal circulation of freon, causing an increase in temperature in the freezer and refrigerator compartments. This situation stimulates the activation of the compressor in an attempt to pump the required volume of refrigerant. The consequence is the appearance of a leak due to too high a temperature and partial freezing of the evaporator located on the back side of the unit.

The process of repairing Atlant refrigerators in this case by our specialists includes:

  • Blowing out a blood clot by injecting high pressure;
  • Evacuation of the capillary pipeline;
  • Freon refill.

Depending on the complexity of the task and the model of the Atlant refrigerator, the cost of its repair can range from 2000-3000 rubles.

Motor malfunction

In single-compressor models (for example, XM 4626 or XM 4425 ND), the malfunction is manifested by the inoperability of the upper and lower chambers. Two-compressor products (modifications XM 6326, XM 6025) are characterized by the presence of two motors, so if one of them fails, the second continues to operate.

Signs of trouble:

  • The compressor refuses to turn on, but the internal lighting remains in working order;
  • Short periods of shutdown or no shutdown at all. This situation is due to the inability to maintain normal pressure in the discharge tube, which leads to an increase in temperature indicators. To reduce to the specified parameters, the motor begins to function almost constantly.

The functionality of the refrigeration unit can be restored by replacing the compressor. The cost of services in our service center is from 3,000 to 6,000 rubles.

Depressurization of the cooling system

A refrigerant leak can be detected by the fact that the compressor turns off extremely rarely. Its constant operation is due to the need to maintain a low temperature in the chambers, which increases due to a disruption in the circulation of freon. At the first stage, the device thaws and the evaporator freezes. At the second stage, after the refrigerant has completely drained out, room temperature is established in the refrigerator and freezer compartments.

To eliminate the problem, it is necessary to identify the place of damage to the copper pipes, seal it and fill the system with freon. We will perform the entire range of work at a price of 3,000 rubles.

What indicates a breakdown of the thermostat in Atlant refrigerators

Do we really need a temperature controller? Maybe the reason for the breakdown is something completely different? Most often, the signs of a thermal relay failure are obvious:

  • the refrigerator runs non-stop and does not turn off on its own;
  • the unit begins to freeze very much in the refrigeration compartment, where in normal mode there should be a low, but still positive temperature;
  • The refrigerator switches off spontaneously and no longer makes any sounds.

The cause of each of these malfunctions may be the temperature controller. In order not to waste money on calling a specialist, we will try to fix the breakdown ourselves.

Atlant refrigerator does not turn off by itself

To make sure that the temperature controller is the cause of the malfunction of the Atlant refrigerator or any other, you need to do this:

  • disconnect the refrigerator from the power supply;
  • remove all food from it and defrost well;
  • move the thermostat knob to the “Max” position or turn on the freeze, if available;
  • Place a thermometer on the middle shelf of the refrigerator compartment (not in the freezer), it is best if it has a negative measurement scale;
  • turn on the refrigeration unit (empty, without food);
  • wait 2 hours, then quickly remove the thermometer and evaluate its readings.

On the thermometer you should see at least 6–7˚С. If this is not the case, repairs are inevitable. And if the thermostat in your refrigerator is electronic, then it is unlikely that you will be able to carry out the repair yourself.

The Atlant refrigerator turns off and is silent

There can be only 3 reasons:

  • The thermostat is broken;
  • the engine start relay has burned out;
  • The refrigeration unit motor burned out.

The last two reasons are, of course, very serious. But we are now interested in the first one. To make sure that it is the thermal relay that you need to replace, you need to check it:

  • unplug the refrigerator;
  • find the location of the thermal relay and remove the protective covers;
  • inspect the device carefully.

Most often, the temperature controller has three or four different colored wires. One of them is usually yellow with a longitudinal green stripe. This is grounding. We won't need it, so put it aside so you don't accidentally snag it. Connect all wires that fit into the thermal relay body directly to each other. If, after turning on the refrigerator, you hear a steady hum from the engine, it means that the temperature controller has failed and you will have to replace it with a new one.

By the way, the wires suitable for the thermostat have the following purpose:

  • orange, red or black - connects the thermostat to the motor;
  • brown - zero, wire leading to the socket;
  • white, yellow or green - leads to a light indicating that the refrigerator is on;
  • striped yellow-green - grounding.

The appearance of a snow coat in the refrigeration chamber of the Atlant refrigerator

If you find such a problem, there may be several factors causing it. So first you need to do all the steps described in the first paragraph. If the thermometer reading was +6˚C or less, quickly turn the thermostat adjustment knob until the refrigerator turns off.

If the refrigerator turns off, everything is fine. No? It is due to be replaced. In the event that the refrigerator turns off, leave it to work without food for at least 5–6 hours. After this, we begin to note the time intervals between turning on and off the compressor. For a properly operating refrigeration unit, this period should be approximately 40 minutes. If you get less, “add” the cold a little, that is, turn the switch a little to the right, clockwise.

If everything went well, you can load the products. No? The temperature regulator will still have to be replaced.

How to check the thermostat yourself

This is how I gradually brought you to the question of how to check the thermostat on a refrigerator for a kettle. Masters, of course, can ring the thermostat or simply turn on the motor directly, but it seems to me to the average person that it is better to use this method to check the thermostat. In short, we will talk about how to properly close the wires that go to the thermostat. In the case when there are 2 contacts on the thermostat, you just need to short-circuit the two wires that go to this part; if the refrigerator motor starts working, then most likely the regulator is faulty. More questions arise when three or four wires go to the thermostat; many people are confused about which contacts need to be closed. Just below you can watch the video that I made exactly on this occasion, in this video I clearly showed which contacts need to be connected to each other in order to bypass the engine shutdown relay

How to check the thermostat (thermostat) on a refrigerator

Watch this video on YouTube

We need to add a little to this video. First of all, I want to say about the green wire with a yellow stripe, sometimes it is yellow with a green stripe, it needs to be put aside, or better yet, cut off and forget about it - this is a grounding wire, if you connect it to other wires, a short circuit will occur. All other wires can be stupidly twisted together. If you see three wires on the thermostat (in addition to the ground wire), then they usually have the following purposes:

  1. Straight wire from the outlet → In most refrigerators it is brown in color. Take the tester in your hands, attach one probe to the contact that fits the thermostat, and connect the other probe to the contact of the refrigerator plug - it should ring
  2. Wire from the engine start relay to the thermostat → Usually black or red, sometimes white (very rarely). In the same way, we take a multimeter in our hands, connect one probe to the terminal that goes to the compressor relay, and the other probe to the wire that goes to the regulator. This way we will find the second wire, which is responsible for supplying current to the motor
  3. Wire for signal light → Comes in different colors: blue, white, green and even red. It can either be removed altogether or connected to the brown wire. It does not play a role in checking the thermostat and starting the engine.

In order to check the thermostat, we need to short-circuit the wire from the socket and the wire from the engine relay. Thus, we will remove the temperature controller from the motor switching circuit; in short, we will connect the motor directly. If the engine starts making operating sounds, then the thermostat needs to be changed, if not → it’s a pipe issue, most likely the problem is in the motor or relay

Do-it-yourself thermostat repair in Atlant refrigerators

In most situations, repairing the thermostat does not make sense, since only replacing the component can completely eliminate the malfunction. At the same time, there are modern types of refrigeration equipment with electronic thermostats that are subject to repair. Such thermostats consist of a temperature sensor and a control module.

There are also models with multiple sensors designed for different cooling areas.

Repair is possible if the relay elements that need to be replaced are damaged. It is carried out like this:

  • Gain access to the temperature sensor. Sometimes this requires removing the upper chamber door. To do this, remove the hinge cover and unscrew the screws. Before dismantling the adjusting handle, remove the plugs and unscrew the bolts. All actions are performed carefully, keeping the fasteners in a small box.
  • The sensor attached to the bracket is removed by unscrewing the screws.
  • If the regulator is located in the main chamber, you need to remove the protective cover of the lighting system. After removing the bolts, the sensor is removed from the seat.
  • Inspect the item. Sometimes it does not work correctly due to a broken bellows (capillary tube). This part can be replaced, eliminating the need to dispose of the relay.
  • The bellows is disconnected from the condenser and removed from the thermostat housing. Install a new tube, connect it to the evaporator, and assemble the relay. The sensor is inserted into the seat. Reassemble the refrigerator in the reverse order.

How to adjust the thermostat with your own hands

Very important!!! In the video above, you should have seen how to adjust the thermostat “to 59” and “to 112”, these are thermostats for a two-chamber and single-chamber refrigerator. If everything is more or less clear with checking the thermostat, then you need to figure out a little about its adjustment. I would like to draw your attention to in what cases it is necessary to adjust the thermostat on the refrigerator. First, I'll start with two-chamber refrigerators. First of all, you need to pay attention to the following factors

  1. How does a crying evaporator freeze in the refrigerator compartment → if the back wall is half covered with frost, and the rest of the part contains condensation in the form of drops, adjustment will not help in this case
  2. The back wall of the refrigerator compartment should be completely covered with frost → if this is not the case, then don’t worry, you need to either refill the refrigerator or insert a crying evaporator
  3. If the temperature in the refrigerator compartment is low → Sometimes it happens that the automation on the thermostat does not work, there can be various reasons, including metal fatigue on the spring
  4. Let's summarize - in most cases, when the refrigerator does not turn off, replacing the thermostat and adjusting it does not help much. At the beginning of the article I explained the operation of the thermostat, the principle is this: no cold - no shutdown

Now let's talk about a single-chamber refrigerator, everything is much simpler here. We open the door to the freezer → see how the frost is distributed in it; if the freezer is covered in ice, then adjusting the thermostat is quite possible. If some area in the freezer is not frozen and the refrigerator does not turn off, then most likely the filter is either clogged or there is a freon leak. In single-chamber refrigerators, a problem often arises with the sealing rubber band; because of this, the refrigerator may also not turn off; in such cases, first of all, it is necessary to either replace the rubber band, or somehow repair it so that it does not allow warm air to pass through, and then start adjusting the thermostat

You must understand that adjusting the thermostat with your own hands is not so easy; it requires experience and patience. For example, setting the thermostat in a two-chamber refrigerator sometimes takes me at least a day, because after each rotation of the adjusting bolt, I wait until the refrigerator enters its mode. With a single-chamber refrigerator, the situation is much simpler, due to the fact that the operating and resting mode in these refrigerators is much shorter and is usually - 5 minutes on, and 8-15 minutes, in two-chamber refrigerators of the new model this mode is - 15-30 minutes on and it costs 40-60 minutes. In conclusion, I want to say this: if you have never encountered adjusting the thermostat, it is better not to get involved, but to entrust this matter to a professional. Below you can watch a video in which I talk about adjusting the thermostat. I think it will be useful not only for dummies but also for beginners
